In the year 865 AD, a massive Viking force landed on the shores of England—an army unlike the raiding bands that had terrorized Europe for generations. Known in the chronicles as the Great Heathen Army, this coalition of Danish and Norse warriors arrived not merely to plunder, but to conquer. Over the following years they would topple kingdoms, reshape the political landscape of England, and establish Viking rule across large portions of the island.

This hand-drawn map print traces the dramatic campaigns of that invasion. At its center is a detailed map of Anglo-Saxon England, showing the major kingdoms of the time—Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, and Wessex—and the locations where Viking armies fought decisive battles, seized cities, and established control.

From the capture of York in Northumbria to the conquest of East Anglia and the long struggle against the kingdom of Wessex, the map follows the advance of the Viking forces as they carved out what would later become known as the Danelaw. Coastal landing sites, inland strongholds, and major battle locations reveal how the Viking armies pushed deeper into England’s political heartland.

Framing the map are illustrated portraits of many of the figures who shaped this era of conflict. Legendary Viking leaders—including Ragnar’s sons such as Ivar the Boneless, Halfdan, and Ubba—appear alongside the Anglo-Saxon kings who resisted them, including the famed King Alfred of Wessex, whose leadership would ultimately halt Viking expansion in southern England.

Additional panels provide historical context for the campaigns of the Great Heathen Army, describing how the Viking forces moved across England and how their conquests transformed the balance of power across the island.

Rendered entirely by hand in detailed cartographic style, the artwork blends geography, historical narrative, and character illustration into a single composition. The result is a map that captures both the movement of armies and the personalities who shaped one of the most dramatic periods of early medieval history.

For those fascinated by Viking history, Anglo-Saxon England, or the age of Norse expansion, this artwork offers a vivid way to explore the campaigns that reshaped England in the ninth century.

Designed to reward a closer look, it’s a map meant not only to decorate a wall—but to bring the age of Vikings vividly back to life.
